Michael James Seaman

June 28, 2017

Michael James Seaman, 53, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 in Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Midland as the result of a bicycle/car accident near Mt. Pleasant.  Mike was born on June 20, 1964 in Jackson, Michigan, the son of James F. and Lura M. (Duke) Seaman.  Mike lived in the Mt. Pleasant area since the age of eighteen.

Mike was a remarkable man.  He was a natural teacher and student, who built his life around experiencing the joys of physical challenges: biking, skiing, paddling, and others.  He cycled around the country and world - from the highest roads and trails of the American Rockies and Sierra Nevada range to the steepest climbs and descents of Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland.  He won races on bicycles and skis.  He fly fished.  He paddled kayaks and canoes for race and for fun.  He sailed boats.  He visited every inhabited continent on the planet with plans to captain boat rides in the Antarctic next year, which would have made his navigation of the globe complete.  He was a true beer and coffee connoisseur - with a soft spot for PBR.  He was an economics professor at Montcalm Community College.
That he excelled physically and was a recognized champion in those sports is really missing the point of his life:  He shared.  He encouraged and helped you be better at biking or skiing or whatever.  He shared his skill, experience, wisdom, and mistakes to help you be better, do better, and enjoy the activity better.   He was a natural teacher - not really able to not teach.  He loved teaching at the community college level, because those were the people at the most risk with the most to gain.  He gladly rode bikes with amateurs, because those were the people trying their hardest.  He spoke with the people who asked the most questions and who listened most intently to answers because those were the people most eager to learn.  He loved and laughed.

Mike is survived by his father, James and his wife Janet Seaman of Clarklake, Michigan; his girlfriend, Gail Zemmol of Mt. Pleasant; his grandmother, Constance Peiffer of Florida; three brothers:  John and Kathi Hutson of Horton, Michigan, J. Todd and Melisa Hutson of Manitou Beach, Michigan and Jeff and Kathy Hutson of Aspen, Colorado.  His sister, Karen and Andrew Hiss of Jackson, Michigan.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Lura in 1966 and his adopted mother, Kathleen in 2005.

Memorial services for Mike will be held on Sunday, July 23 at 4:00 PM at Buckly's Mountainside Canoe Livery 4700 West Remus Road in Mt. Pleasant and a Potluck Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 13th at 1:00 PM at the Clarklake Community Church, Hyde Road, in Clarklake.  Friends desiring to remember Mike with a memorial contribution may wish to consider The League of Michigan Bicyclists.  Envelopes are available at the Rowley Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan   48858.
